There is a lot of attention on ageing pipeline infrastructure at the moment. For example, there is scrutiny on water networks in the UK and the amount of resources we lose because of leaks. Because of all this, forecasts expect growing demand for ERW tubes and other solutions.
Growth ahead
A recent report by Stratview Research supports the forecast. They are estimating that the trenchless pipe rehabilitation market will grow between 2026 and 2032. Notably, they are predicting it will increase from $7.8bn to $9.7bn, with annual growth of 3.7%.
Trenchless pipe rehabilitation is a really interesting solution. It can renew pipes without needing to excavate and remove the old ones. This can save time, reduce disruption, and lower costs. Not surprisingly it is growing in popularity, especially for key applications like rehabilitating water and waste networks.
There are several different methods available here. As a result, stakeholders can choose the best option for each project. Installing new ERW tubes is also a great choice in many cases.
Popular options
Looking specifically at trenchless methods, the most common is CIPP. This involves inserting a new lining into an existing pipe. It cures in place, ensuring the line is leak-proof. It’s a quick, cost effective method, ideal for old pipes including iron, steel, copper, clay, concrete, plastic, and more.
A second option is SIPP. This method involves sending a robotic spraying tool through the pipes. It sprays a new coating on the inside of the pipe. When it cures, it gives it a smooth, durable new lining. Again it is a great option for older pipes, but may not be viable if there is extensive damage.
It’s more challenging to do trenchless rehabilitation if there are issues with the pipes, including collapsed sections or tree roots. However, there is a method called pipe bursting that can tackle even these tricky jobs. It involves sending a steel head through the pipe. It breaks through any obstacles. Crucially, it installs a new plastic pipe at the same time.
