Mill edge or slit edge steel coil?

Did you know that most ERW tubes begin life as steel coil? Coils are easier to produce, transport, and handle than individual sheets. So, the majority of manufacturers prefer them. They can then uncoil and start creating narrower strips to become tubing.

When you deal with coil though, you need to think carefully about the edges. It will have an impact on the processes you need to do to manufacture products, including tubing. We want to have a look at two different edge types here. Then, if you want great tube, you can order from us.

Mill edge

ERW tubesFirstly, we have an unfinished edge. It gets its name because this is how the coils leave the mills. Manufacturers create them by taking a long strip of steel and running it through a series of rollers. In some cases it is necessary to heat the steel first to make it malleable. This makes rolling and coiling easier. However, other steels can be rolled at room temperature. It all depends on the specific alloy and properties like hardness and ductility.

You can easily spot mill edge coil. It tends to be rough and have irregularities and burrs. There hasn’t been any processing here to finish the edges.

Slit edge

The second type of edge is very different because it has been finished. It gets its name from slitting, the process to cut coil into strips. This can be a vital stage for creating things like ERW tubes.

Slit edge coils or strips are fantastic because the processing removes irregularities and burrs. As a result, they are cleaner, smoother, and more consistent.

Which to choose?

Deciding what type of edge to go for can be tricky. It largely comes down to the type of product you are making and the processing you will do. If it is ERW tube, it can be better to have a slit edge. It’ll make welding easier, reducing the risk of flaws. However, if the manufacturing process involves uncoiling and edge milling, you could opt for mill edge.

If the condition of the edges isn’t critical, either from a technical or aesthetic perspective, you should be fine with mill edge. But, if a neat appearance is required or there won’t be any additional processing, slit edge is better.

Choose from a huge range of ERW tubes

Many manufacturers choose ERW tube because it is cost effective and high quality. In addition, with producers like us, there are many different options. This includes round, square, rectangle, and oval shapes in different sizes. Plus, you can get galvanisation and other finishes if you want to improve corrosion resistance and aesthetics.

So, if you want ERW tubes, feel free to contact us. We have experience working with businesses in various industries. As a result, we have extensive knowledge of different applications for the tubing.
