A closer look at grooved pipe and tube fittings

Connecting pipes and tubes effectively is vital in different applications in all kinds of industries. Grooved fittings are still one of the most common options. We want to have a closer look at them here. Then, if you want to order ERW tubes for any project, you can rely on us.

What are they?

ERW tubesA grooved fitting is one of the most interesting ways to join tube and pipe. It’s an old technique, popular for over a century, but has improved massively over time. The same basic idea still applies today though. What you do is create a groove on the exterior close to the ends of tubing. You can then install a gasket to sit in the grooves, with a housing and nuts and bolts, to connect the sections together.

There are two different ways to create the grooves in tube and pipe.

Firstly is roll grooving. It is a cold forming technique that involves using a roll set. It compresses the workpiece, creating a recessed groove. You can use it with different types of ERW tubes, including some types of steel.

There are a couple of key things to keep in mind here. The technique means there is no impact on the properties of the material, including the strength and corrosion resistance. It is also fast, accurate, and easily repeatable. It does create an indent on the inside of the tube or pipe though, so you need to factor that in. Plus, you need to think about the material you are working with and the wall thickness; roll grooving may not be appropriate for hard materials and thicker walls.

The second option is cut grooving. As you can probably tell, it involves physically cutting a groove into the tube or pipe, removing material. It’s a popular alternative, especially in situations when cold forming isn’t viable.

A crucial thing to think about here though is cut grooving is a good choice if the inner tube has a protective coating or lining. It can preserve it, but the edges may need touching up to protect them.

Two techniques

Beyond actually creating the grooves, there are two styles of coupling to consider. It’s important to think about the application and which type will be best for you, especially if you’re dealing with ERW tubes.

The first option is flexible couplings. They allow a degree of movement. So, they are the best choice if you need to allow the tube to flex or move.

The second option is rigid couplings. They are the direct opposite, ensuring the tube or pipe will be completely immobile. If you need stability, they are the best choice. They will offer similar performance to welded or flanged joints.
