Port Talbot EAF delays

The steel industry in the UK is in the midst of a revolution. Big things are happening, particularly work at Port Talbot to create one of the largest electric arc furnaces (EAF) in the world. At the same time, the Government has been active with a new steel strategy, nationalisation of British Steel, and further commitments to funding. We want to have a closer look at the ongoing work in Wales, then if you need to order high quality steel ERW tubes, you can rely on us.

Transformation

ERW tubesPort Talbot is famous for being the largest steelworks in the UK. It is a massive part of the town, significant for jobs and the economy. However, it is in the midst of huge change. The last blast furnace on the site ceased operation in 2024. For over a year work has been underway to build a massive electric arc furnace. It will be able to produce 3.2 million tonnes of greener steel annually once it is operational.

If you look at the Port Talbot Steelworks today you’ll see how much has changed. Critically, there has been a transformation of the land itself, including infilling part of the lagoon and huge excavations for a new fume extraction plant. Additionally, developments are underway to build a substation, a future scrapyard, and key infrastructure.

Delays

While there has been impressive progress, there are also significant delays. This is raising fears that the EAF may not be ready to go online until early in 2029. As a top provider of ERW tubes, we’re keeping a close eye on the developments and wider steel industry.

The major issue is trouble connecting to the national grid to supply electricity to the site. There are problems with expanding a current substation and connecting it to the new one at Port Talbot. This is causing delays and increasing the cost of the project. With the plant originally expecting to come online at the end of 2027, the lost time will also mean they miss out on sales. This will further increase the cost of the project.

In light of the issues, Tata Steel is asking for a new financial package from the UK Government. It could require several million pounds. This will add to the £500m already invested to support the £1.25bn transformation.

There have also been discussions between stakeholders, including the National Grid, Tata Steel, and the Government. Critically, this has included exploration of what actions could be taken to speed up the infrastructural development.
